  • Zoning relief might boost preservation

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 12, 2021

Village officials are discussing a two-pronged approach to help encourage historic preservation in town. One of the strategies is to offer incentives to those who are interested in preserving a historic home. The Hinsdale Village Board and Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission met together Tuesday to discuss a proposal to offer zoning relief in such cases. “The goal is to create a separate, streamlined, user-friendly section in the zoning code with easily applied bulk regulations for historic properties,” village pla...

The upcoming Mind-Body Fest at Wellness House couldn’t come at a better time. “Certainly the past year and a half has been unprecedented, you could say, in terms of anxiety and isolation and for those who are dealing with cancer, even more so,” said Lisa Kolavennu, executive director of Wellness House in Hinsdale. “Yet engaging in these simple acts of self-care really has an alleviating effect for some of those negative experiences of isolation.” The event kicks off Saturday, Aug. 28, with a series of 90-minute sessions desig...

Salmon's job is to protect the buildings that make Hinsdale special while exploring opportunities for expansion and improvement. "We're not interested in growth for the sake of growth," said Salmon, who was drawn to...

  • Writer shares columnist's concern over teardowns

    Updated Aug 11, 2021

No question, Hinsdale is demolishing the stories that reside in its old homes. The village is in the throes of a building boom. Lots of stone and brick delivered to job sights. Loads of slate roofing and copper downspouts, too. Weird little dormers sticking out of slate roofs. Massive ground to roofline windows reflecting multi-story staircases. Some of the homes that are being built seem to possess a design that, in my opinion, is cookie-cutter and lacks a certain aesthetic beauty. It seems doubtful that in 100 years, these...

  • In a mood? You're not alone

    Bill Lewis|Updated Aug 11, 2021

I'm in a mood - and not a good one. I read the papers, look on the internet, get in my car, watch TV, and it seems almost everywhere I go, people are in a mood too. The world is supposedly ending (due to disease or global warming, take your pick), people have decided they no longer need to be civil to one another, much less help each other, and the people we've elected to government offices have largely made everything divisive, attempting to sway people to "their side." My...

  • New wave of mask debate as schools set to reopen

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 11, 2021

I walked into a meeting last week, grabbed a chair and settled in. At some point, I noticed I couldn't quite recognize the person sitting next to me because she was wearing a mask. I looked around and came to the realization that everyone was wearing a mask. I was the only maskhole! Fortunately, I had one in my purse and quickly put it on. I was more prepared when I went to get my haircut a couple of days later. There, it turned out, masks were not in wide use. These moments...

  • All the lessons point to getting students vaxxed

    Updated Aug 11, 2021

The start of school is around the corner. Unfortunately, it will again begin under the cloud of COVID-19. Thankfully this year, unlike in 2020, a majority of the population has been vaccinated, a crucial step in limiting the spread and preventing serious and potential deadly cases. The newly inoculated include many middle school and high school students age 12 and older for whom the Pfizer vaccine was approved. According to Illinois Department of Public Health statistics Wednesday, DuPage County leads the state with almost...

  • Longtime resident has seen town grow up

    Ken Knutson|Updated Aug 11, 2021

The north end of Hinsdale felt more rural than suburban when Virginia Feller and her husband, Bernie, moved there in the 1950s. "This was like a country town then," said the 102-year-old Feller. "The Salt Creek Club was a meadow." The village could boast at having three grocery stores, three drug stores, a bank "and reasonably priced clothing stores with nice merchandise," she noted. Just as today, one just had to make sure not to exceed the downtown parking limit. "They had...

  • Company taps into adults' unique skills

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated Aug 11, 2021

For many parents, a child's impending high school graduation is filled with anticipation of what is to come. But as Matt Friedman approached the end of his years at Hinsdale Central High School, his parents worried about what the future had in store. Diagnosed with autism, Matt lacked the social skills and executive functioning needed for a traditional college experience, said his dad, Hinsdale resident David Friedman. But he knew his son had skills that would be valuable in t...

  • New shops ready to welcome patrons

    Ken Knutson|Updated Aug 11, 2021

Rino Burdi said 24 W. Hinsdale Ave. is the perfect fit for Burdi Clothing shop. "It's like my man cave," he said with a smile. Burdi started in the menswear business with his father at the flagship shop in Chicago. He said the Hinsdale space, which opened last September, is three times the size of the downtown store but has just half the merchandise. "This is just meant to be a little more relaxed and easy. Not in your face," Burdi remarked. Open is the feeling of the store,...

A truck and trailer, carrying a Bobcat loader, flipped over Thursday afternoon on Route 83 just south of the Burlington railroad bridge, shutting down traffic at times. Four people were in the truck but only the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Traffic was stopped while workers turned the truck and trailer right side up to tow them away.
