    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 27, 2020

Summer will look a little different in Hinsdale this year. Restaurants will offer on-street dining, many camps will be virtual and Burlington Park will be quiet Thursday nights. But at least one seasonal tradition will remain the same. Farmers and other vendors will return to Chicago Avenue for the 44th annual Hinsdale Chamber of Commerce Farmers Market. "Our intentions all along were to open on time on June 1," said Claudia Thornton, marketing director for the chamber. "I...

  • Ask an expert - Business profile - Hinsdale Animal Hospital

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 27, 2020

No owners allowed. That was the new reality inside Hinsdale Animal Hospital once the state’s shelter-in-place restrictions went into place in mid-March. Deemed an essential business, the clinic closed its lobby and had clients drop off their pets needing treatment. “We’re having the owners call from the parking lot, and a technician goes out to get the animal,” explained Dee Herman, the practice’s manager. “We’re doing the exams and going over the results on the phone with the...

  • Eugene Urban

    Updated May 27, 2020

Eugene "Gene" Urban, a 57-year resident of Fullersburg, passed away May 10, 2020. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was always ready to share his extensive knowledge and interests. He was an active member in his community and gladly volunteered his accounting knowledge to several Hinsdale organizations, serving on the board of...

  • J. Richard Spatafora

    Updated May 27, 2020

    J. Richard Spatafora, MD, 66, passed away unexpectedly May 24, 2020. A longtime Hinsdale resident, Rick poured himself into the community and gained even more from it. He watched his children grow into thoughtful, kind young adults and valued the part the community played in that. He stayed involved in school performances and board meetings long beyond his children’s time there. Rick believed unequivocally that to provide a child the chance to grow his or her brain is one of the most powerful opportunities a community can imp...

  • Letter critical of Pritzker, Lightfoot hits a nerve

    Updated May 27, 2020

This is the worst letter to the editor I ever saw (John Salidas letter of May 21). This guy sure is a sweetheart. Maybe we should have masks that look like him and ring his bell on Halloween. I feel that Gov. Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot are trying to keep Illinois people safe. — Joe Legner, Hinsdale...

  • Kindness is the best response in these trying times

    Updated May 27, 2020

Two recent experiences in the last 10 days seem worth sharing. Last week on one of the warm days I was leaving the hardware store in Clarendon Hills. A small group of young children with several moms was at the ice cream store while practicing social distancing. When I walked by, a girl about 7 years old said very kindly to me, “Have a good day.” I thanked her. It was my most pleasant experience of the day. Yesterday while leaving the Walgreens in Hinsdale, a woman who like me would be eligible to shop during senior hou...

  • Family hopes husband, father's legacy will carry on

    Updated May 27, 2020

Dr. J. Richard Spatafora passed away suddenly on May 24. We are going forward with love, strength, tenderness and togetherness. He loved his family enough to last a lifetime and then some. We will miss our Rick desperately; a devoted, thoughtful, patient, deeply decent man. He would hope, with all of his heart, that we carry him with us in the form of a generous spirit, an open heart and a peaceful mind. To keep him alive and present within you, within this community he cared for enormously, within all of us, tell your...

  • Unexpected savior during COVID-19

    Susan OByrne|Updated May 27, 2020

I'm going to be honest: the bloom is off the rose. I'm done with family time. What little attraction shelter-in-place once had for me is now gone. We can say how nice it is to slow things down, but all we're really doing is putting lipstick on a pig. I've pretty much run the gamut here. From the initial elation ("Finally some quality time together!") to my manic board game phase ("See? This is FUN! We're all together and we're having FUN!") to my manic baking phase (enough...

  • 'Just say no' good for war on drugs - and me

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 27, 2020

I’m not very skilled at saying no. I have such a hard time, in fact, that one of my friends/co-workers suggested a simple remedy if I find myself unable to respond in the negative when asked to do something I don’t want to do. I should write “No” on an index card and hold it up. I know I’m not the only person who struggles with this. And the reasons why I do are many. First of all, I’m a people pleaser. This is a role many of us — especially women — have been raised to fill....

  • Unexpected final chapter to teacher's career

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated May 27, 2020

Donna Vorreyer never wanted to be anything but a teacher. "I was one of those kids who loved school," she said. "There was never a doubt in my mind that this is what I wanted to do." In her 36-year teaching career, Vorreyer taught students from kindergartners through eighth-graders. But it was the middle schoolers who she came to enjoy most. "I started to realize how much more I could do with the older kids," said Vorreyer, who after a few years teaching in the lower grades...

  • Hearing will take pulse on historic preservation

    Updated May 27, 2020

Historic Preservation Month typically comes and goes without controversy. Past commemorations have included coloring contests for kids and the presentation of awards from the Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission. We’ve published everything from a single article or editorial to a month-long series reminding residents of the architectural treasures the village is fortunate to have within its boundaries. This year the discussion around historic preservation has reached a fevered pitch. Many preservations argue the only w...

  • Chocolate just makes everything better

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 27, 2020

Helping others is part of the culture at World's Finest Chocolate. So when COVID-19 restrictions were put in place, the folks who work at the Chicago company found themselves in unfamiliar territory, focused on their own survival. "Our business is around doing good and helping people do the things they want to do through fundraising," said Eddie Opler of Hinsdale, who runs the company started by his grandfather in 1939. "That came to halt and it was scary and so out of our...

Natalie Howard, Liz Youngman, Emilie Chadwell, Katie Sharp, Jenna Collignon, Jessica Joy, Ana Suchy and Olivia Beargie gathered on the steps at Hinsdale Central to celebrate. This lion on Lincoln Street was sporting a cap for the evening. Grace Piller's dad pulled off a surprise parade while she was posing for pictures in front...

  • Hinsdale merchants ready for restart

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 27, 2020

Starting tomorrow, Hinsdale restaurants and bars are permitted to serve patrons outdoors and retail shops can admit customers. That's welcome news to hard-hit business owners, who have been eagerly anticipating the state's shift into Phase 3 of Gov. JB Pritzker's Restore Illinois plan. The village has developed a plan to partially close First Street between Garfield and Washington streets to accommodate tables on the roadway, installing protective concrete barriers and...
