  • Tipsy Tuesday turns into Therapy Tuesday

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 19, 2022

A group of four neighbors met for a drink one afternoon two years ago, with no idea how significant the gathering would become. "Jodi, on a random Tuesday, it was sunny, all our husbands were away, said, 'Do you want to go to Fuller House?' " Nerida Thomas recalled. "We walked. That was the start one." A week later, the world had shut down due to COVID-19. Thomas, Jodi Brubaker and Marnie Joy, all of whom live on Grant Street, and Ali Guinta, whose house is around the corner...

  • New series looks at life 'Beyond COVID'

    Updated May 19, 2022

Trying to anticipate the next turn the COVID-19 pandemic will take is exhausting. We all remember how we were going to stay home for two weeks in March of 2020 to “flatten the curve,” right? Of course, the curve didn’t flatten and those two weeks have extended into two years. The pandemic looks different now than it did in the early days. The variants currently in circulation are significantly weaker, and we’ve learned a lot about how the virus is or is not transmitted. But we still find ourselves on a bit of a roller...

  • Cause of, solution to, life's problems

    Bret Conway|Updated Apr 13, 2022

To quote another Brett (but I spell mine with one 'T'), "Yes, we drank beer. My friends and I. Boys and girls. I liked beer. Still like beer." I've moved on from my '80s Old Style days with the rise of the craft beer/microbrewery scene around 2010. Back then, Three Floyds was, and remains, a 5-minute drive from my parent's house. When supply ran low, my dad was a willing interstate beer mule, delivering fresh Zombie Dust cases. As luck would have it, one of my 21 cousins in/ar...

  • Resident supports Galassi, Hart for county board

    Updated Apr 13, 2022

On April 19, 2001, my wife, Tracey, and I moved to the United States from Northern Ireland for what was meant to be a temporary work opportunity. Tracey was carrying our first baby, who became the first American citizen in our family. Becoming U.S. citizens ourselves took many years of waiting and trying, finally culminating at a swearing-in ceremony in Chicago. The first election we have the privilege to take part in hits close to home, as we know a candidate who’s running well and are ardent supporters of her cause. Kari G...

  • No planes, no trains, no automobiles

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 13, 2022

The alarm went off at 4 a.m. I hadn’t slept all that well in the AC Marriott in Fort Lauderdale, but I woke up quickly. We needed to get the 4:30 a.m. shuttle to the airport for our flight. But even before I had the chance to get out of bed, Dan delivered the bad news. “Our flight’s canceled,” he said. We were stunned. A day earlier it had seemed like a good idea to change our Saturday flight — originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. but delayed to 8:30 p.m. — to a Sunday morn...

  • Central junior promises fun at spring musical

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated Apr 13, 2022

Annie Koziel describes her character in Hinsdale Central High School's spring musical as melodramatic, narcissistic, insecure and oddly endearing. "She's so ridiculous, but also relatable," Koziel said of Rona Lisa Peretti, a lead character in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," opening April 22 on the Hinsdale Central stage (turn to Page 22 for details). The show centers on a fictional spelling bee at the equally fictional Putnam Valley Middle School. First produced...
