  • Stories of alternative universes abound

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 23, 2020

Alternative universes. They were the subject of a recent podcast from This American Life - "Gardens of Branching Paths." I enjoyed hearing the stories of a Jew imagining parallel universes without the Nazis, a speech President Bill Clinton might have given before he was impeached, twins who feared they were switched as infants and a Korean-born woman who wondered what life might have been like had she not been adopted by an American couple. At first I thought the topic of...

  • It's all downhill for these families

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jan 22, 2020

Forget sun-drenched, sandy oceanside winter escapes. Head for the higher elevations, where a little windburn is harmless and precipitation is the desired forecast. That's the perfect travel plan for some Hinsdale families this season, downhill ski enthusiasts that embrace the season of snow. We talked to the Grieves and the Risingers about the joy that rises within them as they descend the slopes. The Grieve family Elizabeth Grieve, 15, finds such fulfillment in skiing that...

  • Life, liberty and the pursuit of libraries

    Karen Keefe|Updated Jan 22, 2020

My fourth-grader is studying the American Revolution. Which means our family is constantly being told or quizzed about the American Revolution. ("No, I don't know the date of the Boston Massacre. ... Yes, I'm sure that it was before 1776.") It has also caused me to reflect on how scary, courageous and amazing the founding of our country was. And, how puzzling and wonderful that the pursuit of happiness is one of the first rights granted to citizens of this new land. The pursui...

  • Meditation is the cure for what ails you

    Updated Jan 22, 2020

"Meditation is, in my mind, the most radical thing a human can do. It's a way to shift our state in the moment to be more relaxed and available. But even more importantly, it's a way to shift who we are in all future moments, so that our baseline way of operating in the world is calmer and clearer, more fearless, more caring." - Jeff Warren Some people think they would never be able to meditate. They have too many thoughts racing through their minds. Those folks aren't the...

"We kind of do a little bit of everything," she said. "Some like the Thai food better, others like the hibachi." Both have been popular this winter at the 44 S. Washington St. eatery. • Childhood memory comes alive again

    Carol Wittemann|Updated Jan 22, 2020

It was almost midnight when we settled in by the fire and my friend said to the group, "I want to hear everyone's favorite childhood memory." Groans of protest ensued. "Come on ... a favorite childhood memory, any childhood memory," he persisted. Tired but intrigued, we gave in. I passed on the first go round, combing my brain for a favorite. Other friends jumped right in with stories that ran the gamut - an exuberant purchase of a long forbidden video game system, a broken...
