  • Issues in D86 have divided board members

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Feb 13, 2023

The Hinsdalean typically begins its election coverage looking at the various topics that have been discussed at the board table over the past few years, with the goal of giving voters a sense of what new board members will face after the election. The superintendent and a sitting board member usually are interviewed for the story, and special attention is paid to any topics that have been divisive. In Hinsdale High School District 86, it would almost be easier to list topics that have not split the board than those that...

However, this year might just be her greatest role, as she and husband Ed have been selected as the nonprofit's 2023 Heart of Gold recipients. Burke's devotion to Misericordia started as a way to give back to the organization that she says "takes care of God's most vulnerable children" including her husband's...

  • Are you listening to this music?

    Bill Barre|Updated Feb 8, 2023

Among my several pet peeves is perhaps the granddaddy of them all - loud music playing everywhere, all the time, yet no one is listening. "What music?" If no one is listening to it, then is it even playing? This is kind of like the tree falling in a forest and no one being there to hear it. Does it still make a "thud?" So, if no one is listening to this music that plays everywhere, all of the time, then what is its purpose? Here's my guess - the death of silence. Remember...

  • Love is a many splendid (or multifaceted?) thing

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Feb 8, 2023

I've been thinking a lot about love lately - and not because Valentine's Day is only a few days away. I've been thinking about love because Dan Harris keeps bringing it up on 10 Percent Happier, one of my favorite apps. He's not a mushy guy, and he's not talking about sappy romantic love - or even sappy self-love, although self-love is an important part of his message. Here's what he has to say about it: "Self-love, properly understood, not as narcissism, but as having your ow...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Feb 8, 2023

Grace Shin said her ethnic heritage was a subject of curiosity among her elementary classmates in suburban Detroit. "I was asked often, 'Are you Chinese or Japanese?' And I would say, 'No, I'm Korean,' " Shin recounted. "And the other kids would be like, 'I don't know what that is.' " But they quickly learned what mandu was, as Shin's mom would serve the popular Korean dumplings at the school's cultural exchange event. "People loved it, and I remember feeling so much pride,"...

The intersection of York and Ogden was once the center of Brush Hill, which preceded Hinsdale's founding by about 30 years, according to Sandy William's book, "Images of America - Hinsdale." In the 1850s Benjamin Fuller incorporated many lots at the intersection as Fullersburg. The photo above is of the intersection in 1946,...
