  • Teens tackle bias in society

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 21, 2020

What percentage of the day are you with people of your own gender/race/class/age/belief system? What are the last five books you read or programs you watched? When traveling through different communities, do you notice different housing patterns or density? Do those differences seem to have any correlation to race or class? These are a few of the perspective-stirring questions posed by Hinsdale Central's Students Organized for Anti-Racism (SOAR) club as part of their 14-day...

Virtual rotary run keeps pace The Virtual Rotary Run Charity Classic netted $80,000, almost as much as last year’s successful race. “Our goal this year, as always, is to positively impact the lives of many area residents,” said Tom Norton, president of the Hinsdale Rotary Club. Proceeds benefited leading community charities: The Community House, District 181 Foundation, Hinsdale Hospital Foundation, Rotary Club of Hinsdale Foundation and Ray Graham Association-Hanson Center. More than 200 individuals participated in the 2...

  • Ask an expert - JUI KHANKARI, NONPROFIT FOUNDER

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

How can people learn more about artificial intelligence? What does a high school student do when she can't find adequate resources to fuel her interest in artificial intelligence? She starts her own international educational nonprofit, of course. After attending a summer camp at Stanford University as a high school freshman, Hinsdale Central junior Jui Khankari was left with a hunger to learn more about artificial intelligence and its potential, specifically in medicine. "I...

The village’s leaf pick-up program, which offers free, unlimited, weekly curbside collection of leaves in kraft paper yard waste bags, begins next week. Bagged leaves should be placed in the parkway in front of the home, along the curb. Do not place bags in the street. Pick-up will run for six weeks at the time of regularly-scheduled weekly yard waste pick-up, starting the week of Oct. 26 and ending the week of Nov. 30. Leaves will be picked up by the village’s waste hauler, Republic Services. Leaves also may be kept on the...

  • A simple reminder from Rules of the Road 101

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

I have frequently observed people playing “chicken” with vehicles on our Hinsdale streets, trying to be first to get around other parked vehicles. We have congestion due to landscape, construction and repair trucks serving our community. We also have parents lining up to transport students to and from school. Illinois Rules of The Road, Chapter 4, Page 29, states regarding lane usage that vehicles must stay in the right lane and cannot cross over to the left lane until they yield to oncoming traffic. Clearly, this has not...

  • Let's forget about tomorrow

    Kelly Abate Kallas|Updated Oct 21, 2020

Funny how a pandemic can mess with a person's sense of time. It seems like those days in mid-March were last week and also 10 years ago. I have a close friend who said that now "every day is Tuesday": not days to be anticipated like weekend days, nor days to be dreaded like Mondays. Every day indistinct enough to be a Tuesday. Time confusion isn't unique to 2020 though. Those of us with children have always known about the time warp known as parenthood. When our kids were...

  • See data before approving D86 integrated math

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

I oppose the proposed D86 integrated math proposal that the D86 board of education will approve on Oct. 29. For me, the primary reason is lack of data. As board member Turek knows, since he served with me on the D181 BOE that approved the failed Learning for All math plan, data matters. The D181 BOE relied on the administrators’ and teachers’ representation that “raising the floor” by accelerating every student one year in math would “raise the ceiling” and improve math outcomes for all students. There was no data to sup...

  • Enjoy choosing costumes now - while you can

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 21, 2020

If you're lucky, you have a great pic of your kids in their Halloween costumes taken by Jim Slonoff at one of Hinsdale's Fall Family Fests. My favorite one of Ainsley is from 2009, when she was just 10 months old and dressed as an adorable pink bunny. She's sitting by a pint-sized pumpkin with her cloth carrot resting in her lap and one of her silly little half smiles on her face. She's had some great costumes over the years - Minnie Mouse, a witch, Cinderella and Laura Ingall...

  • With plenty to lament, take heart in right to vote

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

The Nov. 3 election is less than two weeks away. Of course, many reading this have joined with millions across the country in already casting ballots. The unprecedented number of early voters suggests the possibility of a record turnout this year. Perhaps an exhortation to vote in 2020 comes off more like preaching to the choir than in years past. But we believe that advocating for citizens to exercise their Constitutional right to select their government representatives is never superfluous. We have provided charts...

  • Helping the homeless is where Hinsdale woman's heart is

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 21, 2020

A virtual networking tool brought to Jacqui Wooldridge's attention a very real need earlier this year. The Hinsdale resident saw a call for helpers to join a group of Downers Grove women's outreach to the dozen or so homeless citizens that gather near that village's downtown train station. It was an invitation her servant-hearted spirit couldn't refuse. "I felt like (God) opened a door for me to help here," said the deeply faith-driven Wooldridge. Once a week since June, she...

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

Twenty-three Hinsdale residents have been diagnosed with a confirmed case of COVID-19 over the past week. The DuPage County Health Department reported 19 new cases and the Cook County Health Department reported four new cases. That brings the total number of confirmed cases in the village to 445. • Rising cases shut down indoor dining for now

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 21, 2020

Indoor dining will be on hiatus in Hinsdale starting at 11 p.m. Friday. Gov. JB Pritzker announced Tuesday that indoor service at restaurants and bars will be prohibited in DuPage County starting Friday. The restrictions also apply to Kane, Will and Kankakee counties. Vistro owner Paul Virant, a Hinsdale resident, had just met with his staff Wednesday morning to begin planning for the change. "We have that tent that has forced air heat. We'll at least be able to have dining...

  • Tax amendment a complicated proposition

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Oct 21, 2020

The division over the tax amendment to the state constitution Illinois voters will see on the Tuesday, Nov. 3, ballot is evident from the way supporters and opponents refer to the proposal. Supporters of the amendment, which is expected to bring in $3.4 billion a year, call it the “Fair Tax” proposal. The proposed progressive tax will address the inequity in the tax burden, said Kim Savage of Darien, chairman of the Downers Grove Township Democratic Organization. At the lowest income levels, people pay 12 to 14 percent of...

  • Once upon a time

    Updated Oct 21, 2020

Devil in the details - Myrta Holmes, the former wife of serial killer H.H. Holmes, rented various homes throughout the village, including this one at 212 N. Lincoln St. in 1912. She moved to Hinsdale with her daughter in 1896, the year her estranged husband was executed. According to Sandy Williams' book, "Images of America - Hinsdale," Holmes taught third and fourth grades at least 15 years in the Hinsdale Public School system. H.H. Holmes was featured in Erik Larson's book...

  • North side medical buildings change hands

    Ken Knutson|Updated Oct 21, 2020

The Salt Creek Medical Campus is under new ownership. The set of four outpatient medical office buildings on Hinsdale's north end, containing a total of 156,600 square feet of office space, was sold on Sept. 4 for $50.9 million to Remedy Medical Properties by MedProperties Group. Jay Heald of MedProperties said the medical office property has long been a favorite target for investors and that market has become particularly sought after in recent years. "Health care has always...
