That figure is expected to contract to about 47.6 percent of operating expenses by fiscal year 2029, according to Mindy Bradford, assistant superintendent of business and operations. • Staffing is still an issue in District 86

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Mar 27, 2024

Staffing and course offerings continued to be a topic of discussion last week in Hinsdale High School District 86. At one point at the March 21 school board meeting, it looked like the board might postpone approving the 2024-25 staffing until its April 11 meeting. Board President Cat Greenspon made a motion to do so and was discouraged by administrators. “The logistical piece of finishing the scheduling process prior to the end of the year so we can get to that discussion about course confirmations and communicating that i...

  • Get ready to celebrate National Library Week in April

    Martha Kennedy|Updated Mar 27, 2024

I am fortunate to have met many delightful members of our community at Hinsdale Public Library's front desk. Mr. S. was an avid reader. He had a positive, robust energy that was, on every meeting, infectious. He visited the library just about weekly and we always loved seeing him. He'd check out a stack of books and never needed a due date slip because he knew he would see us the following week. When other patrons were at the front desk, he would invariably let them know that...

  • Trip to Liverpool, London didn't let us down

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Mar 27, 2024

My senior year in college, as part of a January "short term" group trip to France and England, we traveled by bus to Wales to read William Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey" at Tintern Abbey. I'm not a huge fan of poetry in general or Wordsworth in particular, but the memory of that day has stayed with me. Last week I had a similar experience - this time, set to catchy tunes. Dan and I took Ainsley to Liverpool and London to see the stomping grounds of her favorite band, The...

  • Faith unveiled in many ways

    Carissa Kapcar|Updated Mar 27, 2024

Faith is a timely topic this week. According to Google, faith is the trust or confidence in someone or something. It's also described as a strong belief in God or the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. My own interpretation is that faith is opening yourself up, allowing something into your heart that can't be seen or proven, yet felt very deeply. It's an acceptance that we won't always have the answers and a vulnerability to trust the...

  • Ninety-day minimum sounds right for house rentals

    Updated Mar 27, 2024

Next month the Hinsdale Village Board is likely to take action on short-term rentals, changing the zoning code to prohibit people from renting Hinsdale homes for fewer than a specified number of days. Trustees, in referring the matter to the plan commission for a public hearing, suggested that threshold be 180 days. Plan commissioners said they think 90 days is a more appropriate number, and we agree. The complex nature of this issue was evident at the March 13 public hearing. First, it’s tough to determine exactly how many H...

The son of former McDonald's Corporation CEO Jim Cantalupo, the Hinsdale resident knew from a very young age that the fast food giant was about more than cheeseburgers and fries. Through the work of Ronald McDonald House Charities, it's also about helping families. "I decided to join the board when there was an opportunity back in 2013," said Cantalupo, who served as board chair for Ronald Mc...
