  • 11U teams bring home state championships

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Aug 9, 2023

The 11-year-olds on the Hinsdale Little League All-Star team weren't content with just one state title. So the boys, who won the championship last year as 10-year-olds, offered a repeat performance this year, beating Elmhurst 9-0 Aug. 2 to become the best 11U team in the state. "Of the 13 kids that were on our team, 11 were on the team last year," coach John O'Toole said. "They leaned on their experience from 2022 when we won the 8/9/10 division in Illinois." The team...

  • Then and now

    Updated Aug 2, 2023

Voters approved a $3.9 million bond issue in December 1973 to build a new three-story junior high next to the Garfield School, with the first students moving into the Hinsdale Junior High School in March 1976. Forty-three years later, a successful $53 million referendum led to the construction of the new Hinsdale Middle School, which opened to students in January 2019. (Jim Slonoff photos)...

  • MICHAEL PRIETO, HIGH JUMPER

    Updated Jul 19, 2023

What are the keys to high jumping? Failing to qualify for the high jump finals in May's IHSA state track and field meet left Hinsdale Central's Michael Prieto understandably low. "I wanted to definitely do better," said the rising senior. "So that's really when I decided to jump in the summer." Suddenly Prieto was elevating his performance. On June 24 he placed first at the USATF Junior Olympic state championship for ages 17-18 at the University of Illinois-Champaign with a...

  • Letter - Watch out for kids on scooters, electric bikes

    Updated Jul 12, 2023

The swarms of kids on Go Trax scooters and Suron electric bikes are out in full force. The speed of these electric vehicles can go anywhere from 8 to 15 mph and can create the strong possibility of a parent’s/child’s worst nightmare or a driver’s worst nightmare. I have noticed these children (with or without helmets), mostly middle school age, riding all over town — on sidewalks, in the streets, in the neighborhoods. They also ride in downtown Hinsdale, where traffic can be tricky to navigate for drivers, let alone kids. D...

  • July Fourth parade highlight of summer

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated Jun 28, 2023

The Fourth of July parade has been a summer tradition for generations of kids growing up in Hinsdale, including Tim Balster. From the time he was in elementary school, Balster said he always found a way to not only watch the parade, but to participate. He pulled a model of the Liberty Bell behind his decorated bike and at age 11 traversed the entire parade route via pogo stick. After a few years of juggling while riding a unicycle, Balster landed on his most notable mode of...

  • Fatal shooting hits close to home

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jun 21, 2023

Less than 36 hours after a man was fatally shot June 18 in the vicinity of Hinsdale Lake Terrace, The Community House welcomed 72 kids in the neighborhood to the first day of summer camp. “We made the decision to start summer camp as normal,” said Dan Janowick, executive director of The Community House. “We had two members of The Community House social work team to start summer camp with us.” The Community House has been partnering for almost 30 years with Community Consolidated Elementary District 180 to provide after-s...

  • A dozen years pass in the blink of an eye

    Stephanie Seppanen|Updated Jun 21, 2023

Recently I was having a conversation with a mom of two school-age kids. "Only 10 more weeks until school starts!" she said, already feeling drained with near constant summer activities and endless questions asked by her daughter. I nodded my head, because I vividly remember those days, running after three little boys and counting down the hours until my husband came home from work. I reminded my friend of the saying, "The days are long and the years are short," a cliche so...

  • Top-10 finish for Central girls track

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 24, 2023

Seniors Elyssa Chandler and Catie McCabe already shared a membership in Hinsdale Central's Class of 2023. After last weekend's IHSA girls track state meet, they have another identifier in common: four-time All-State honoree. Chandler, who earned All-State status last year with her seventh-place performance in the 300-meter hurdles last year, garnered three more nods in Saturday's final at Eastern Illinois University. Two were in hurdles, with Chandler improving her 300-meter...

  • Ask an expert - GAIL VESCOVI, ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

    Sandy Illian Bosch|Updated May 17, 2023

How has your job changed over the past 30 years? The school day at Hinsdale Middle School begins at 8:25 a.m., but Gail Vescovi typically arrives hours earlier to walk the halls, get a little exercise and take in the quiet before 700 children and dozens of teachers and staff fill the building at Garfield Avenue and First Street. Vescovi will walk the halls for the last time when school ends this year. After 30 years in District 181, she has chosen to retire. Vescovi began...

  • Yearbooks great fun in the moment, decades later

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 17, 2023

Today, May 18, in the commons at Hinsdale Central, the yearbook is coming. The 80th edition, to be precise, of El Diablo. I learned this from a very dramatic video, presumably made for Tik Tok and then re-posted on Facebook with the hope that Central parents and teachers (i.e. people too old for Tik Tok) would see it. Although we did not have Tik Tok when I was in high school (phones were still mounted on the wall and you could only walk as far as the cord attached to the rece...

  • Teens take steps for mental health

    Pamela Lannom|Updated May 10, 2023

About 2.7 million youth are experiencing severe major depression. Sixty percent of youth with major depression do not receive mental health treatment. Some 1.2 million U.S. youth with private insurance do not have coverage for mental or emotional challenges. Hinsdale Central juniors Maya Menon, Moria Hughes and Kavya Ravi are working to do what they can to change those statistics. The Junior Board members at The Community House have been helping to plan the Walk the Walk for...

  • Letter - Elected officials deserve recognition as volunteers, too

    Updated May 3, 2023

I appreciated your recent editorial on National Volunteer Month and the contributions of volunteers to our community organizations. As a former volunteer at the Hinsdale Humane Society, and for PTOs at The Lane School, Hinsdale Middle School and Hinsdale Central, I have been lucky enough to have a ground-level view of how much volunteers contribute, on so many levels. But you neglected to mention a set of volunteers who often aren’t treated as such: the elected officials of our local government. Here in Hinsdale, our s...

  • Student athlete profile - Jack Treiber

    Ken Knutson|Updated May 3, 2023

Jack Treiber Senior Hinsdale At what age did get you hooked on tennis? Probably when I was around 10, going into middle school. That's when I started playing serious tennis. My sister plays tennis at the U of I. What do you love about the sport? Just the energy when you're playing a really tough, gritty match. You have to hone in on yourself and find a different head space to finish and win the match. What does it mean to be part of the Central tennis program? It's very...

CHMS band invited to superstate The Clarendon Hills Middle School eighth-grade band has been invited to perform at the prestigious University of Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival May 5 at the Krannert Center in Champaign-Urbana. It’s been a decade since a CHMS band has performed at SuperState, with the last appearance in 2013. At SuperState, three classes of high schools are invited to perform, based on school size, but only one middle school class, which makes it extremely competitive and difficult to be chosen at t...

  • Thanks, kids, for the material

    John Bourjaily|Updated Apr 26, 2023

Of all the columns I've written over the years, the ones that usually elicit the most feedback are the stories about my children. It's an easy one for me. I like to play the part of the proud father boasting about some recent accomplishment or reflecting on a life milestone for one of my daughters. So, as I wrap up my current columnist tenure with The Hinsdalean, I thought it would be appropriate to go back to what I do best. Bragging about my kids! The problem is, I'm not...

  • Village may shift parking deck rules

    Ken Knutson|Updated Apr 26, 2023

When the Hinsdale’s parking deck opened in 2020, the pandemic was suppressing activity in the village’s central business district and leaving the new facility’s usage patterns in neutral. Almost three years later, officials have found that the 189 village-controlled lower level spaces are typically filled during prime daytime hours. The investment has paid off, suggested Hinsdale Village President Tom Cauley at the April 18 village board meeting, with central business district merchants and employees parking in the deck...
