The Tigers struck first on a long touchdown run and the extra point for a 7-0 lead. More bad luck befell the Falcons, as a few players were injured. The Falcons’ offense was stymied, but the Tigers were...

  • It's beginning to look a lot like the holidays

    Allison Peters|Updated Nov 8, 2023

Any walk through town would tell you that the holidays are just around the corner - and so is perhaps the biggest event of the winter season: The Community House Holiday Ball. This year's sold-out event on Dec. 2 is sure to dazzle lucky ticket-holders with eye-popping decor, all in a theme of the Roaring '20s. Best of all, proceeds from the event go directly to supporting one of the area's most vital organizations: The Community House. When I moved to Hinsdale, I primarily...

  • Ask an expert - HANNAH BROWN, ACTOR

    Ken Knutson|Updated Nov 8, 2023

What should we know about 'Puffs'? Hinsdale Central senior Hannah Brown suggests the power of the Force animated her interest in theater. "I really liked 'Star Wars' when I was little, and I wanted to be a Jedi," Brown related. "I found out that wasn't realistic, but I thought if I was an actor then I could play a Jedi." Wanting to impact others the way memorable performances had moved her, she joined the Central's drama club freshman year. In the middle of the pandemic, she...

  • Sharing veterans' stories a treasured part of job

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Nov 8, 2023

It’s a privilege to be entrusted with sharing the stories of people’s lives. I feel that often as I sit typing on my laptop at The Hinsdalean office, looking out on First Street. I’ve completed an interview and face the task of transforming my notes into a story that will capture the individual I’m writing about, make sense to the reader — and fit the assigned space. Some days the job is easier than others, but it’s one I always enjoy doing. As we approach Veterans Da...

Two-hundred and seven. That’s how many veterans are listed in our Veterans Day special section today. And it’s a record. Some of these men and women are neighbors here in town. Others are the parents, grandparents, children, aunts and uncles of Hinsdale residents. They are members of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines who fought in the Civil War, World War I, World...

When John Zick decided to apply for the Navy's Holloway Plan - similar to the ROTC - he had no way of knowing what his assignment would be after he finished his schooling. Soon after making full lieutenant on July 1, 1968, Zick received his orders. He was going to Vietnam. "The war was raging. This was a real hot area that I was going to. That I knew," he said. He arrived in Saigon Dec. 21, a "total cultural change," he said. "The night was lit up with fires and machine guns."...

  • Soldiers shared stories from the front

    Ken Knutson|Updated Nov 8, 2023

Eight decades ago, America was at war in the largest, most deadly conflict the world has ever seen. Hinsdale residents, like those of every other town across the country, waited on any word that their native sons and daughters serving in distant lands were alive and well. In 1944 the The Doings newspaper reached out to homegrown U.S. service members for letters to include in the paper's 50th anniversary issue the following year. In observance of Veterans Day, we include excerp...

Safety bollards installed at Fuller’s Car Wash in the wake of a fatal accident this summer will be concealed under a proposal from the business. At Tuesday’s Hinsdale Village Board meeting, trustees held a first read on Fuller’s plan to enclose the 3-foot-5-inch concrete-filled steel posts in a brick wall to match the building at 102 W. Chicago Ave. The 11 bollards were installed in August, shortly after Hinsdale’s Sean Richards, 14, was struck and killed July 17 when a vehicle exiting the car wash accelerated into the sid...
