Peter J. Bokos

Peter J. Bokos, 76, of Hinsdale died April 19, 2024.

Peter was a devoted husband, father, Papou and brother. He was known for his gentle nature, compassion for those around him, generosity and his unique storytelling ability. Combined with his diverse achievements, love for the arts, boating and cars, Peter forged strong and meaningful relationships with many in his community both as a mentor and friend.

Peter was a thrill-seeker. He traveled the world with his wife, family and other car and boating enthusiasts in search of adventure. He built a high-speed cruising yacht for his family and friends, creating lasting memories in Florida and overseas.

Most summers, you could find Peter and his family vacationing in Twin Lakes, Wis., where he spent time with friends met through the Aquanuts and the Twin Lakes Sailing Club.

Over the years, Peter served on numerous boards, committees, and commissions and received several distinguished service awards in the field of behavioral health. Peter received his doctorate in public health and urban studies, was past president of the Illinois Association of Behavioral Health, and a board member of the Illinois Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependency of the Department of Human Services. Peter lectured and was an associate professor at the University of Chicago Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Neuroscience. He authored more than 50 publications encompassing science, social service, management and public systems files through his research and writing endeavors.

While he leaves behind notable contributions to research, education, and advocacy as well a decorated legacy of service in behavioral health, Peter will be more so remembered for his purpose and zest for life. He will truly be missed by all his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years to Michele Bokos, neé Kastner; his children, Nicole (Alex) Hart, Preston (Devyn) Bokos, Alexis (Nick) Gaughan and Sterling (fiancé Michael Chmielewski) Bokos; his brother, William (Susan and family) Bokos; and his grandchildren, Berenger and Phoenix Jeannides, Haley and Charlie Hart, Peter Braxton, Remingtyn and Burlingtyn Bokos, and Gunner and Skye Gaughan.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at Sullivan Funeral Home, 60 S. Grant St., Hinsdale.

Visitation will continue at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Saint Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 11025 S. Roberts Road, Palos Hills. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. at the church.

Interment is at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.
