John Edward Molloy, 73, a 21-year Hinsdale resident, died Jan. 10, 2020.

John died the way he lived: he wrote his own rules, he pushed passed authority and paved his own way, and if you said he couldn’t do it, he would make sure he could.

Ladies’ man, successful business outlaw, snappy dresser and social bon vivant, John told his last inappropriate joke at the hospital (sorry, the joke cannot be reprinted here) the day he died.

Up until the end, John would defy his doctor’s orders by creating his own culinary-restricted meal program revolving around late-night binges of cookies and caramel corn or sneaking out of his bed in the intensive care unit to grab a piece of pie. Defiance with a strong dose of shenanigans are what drove John to success and forever touched his family members’ hearts with love and laughter.

Of all the people John touched, his proudest achievements in life were the love of his two daughters, Leigh and Erin, and his grandchildren, Caitlin and Ryan.

He is survived by his children, Erin (Matthew) Vahl and Leigh Molloy; his grandchildren, Caitlin and Ryan Vahl; his siblings, Dennis (Mary Lou), Mary Jean Fink, the late Eugene (the late Grace), Peggy, and Michael (Brenda Borri); and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation is at 3 today, Jan 16, at Sullivan Funeral Home, 60 S. Grant St., Hinsdale. A prayer service will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home along with an open mic to share stories of John.

Immediately following, John wanted all to go to York Tavern and raise a glass or two to toast his well-lived life.
