Grace Van Houtte Senior Hinsdale When did you start playing water polo? I first started playing competitively when I was a sophomore. I originally was a swimmer, and a lot of my swimming friends said water polo is another really good sport to try if you enjoy swimming but just need a little bit of a break. What do you enjoy most about the sport? I really enjoy the team aspect. I feel like a lot of water polo is just figuring out people's strengths and weaknesses and figuring...

  • March is colorectal cancer awareness month

    Dr. Ralph Hermes|Updated Mar 15, 2023

Colorectal cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. The American Cancer Society reports the rate of colorectal cancer diagnosis has dropped in people older than 50 by about 1 percent each year since the mid-1980s, a phenomenon attributed to an increase in screenings and lifestyle changes. • Donated piano has HMS students singing

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Mar 15, 2023

John Cordogan was touring Hinsdale Middle School shortly after moving to town last summer when he stepped in the choir room and immediately noticed the piano. "It didn't take long for me to know they needed a new piano - I could see from across the room they needed a new piano," said Cordogan, who owns Cordogan's Pianoland with his sister, Dianthe. Choir director Ashley Sipka remembers the day well. "I walked in my room and he was just sitting at the old piano, and he was...

After volunteering at a workday at Fullersburg in December 2021, Stang said he learned of the need for a volunteer site steward - someone to coordinate regular efforts to keep the area...

  • One's teardown is another's treasure

    Lisa Seplak|Updated Mar 15, 2023

Our house is a very fine house. When we moved into our split, it was a compromise of sorts. The house - around 50 years old - was not new, yet not really old. Instead, it was affordable and fixed up. Nice and new to us. No weekends would be spent rehabbing. A compromise because I'm an old house person and my spouse a new house person. Give me quirky layouts, stairs in the kitchen, musty smells from summers past, spirits left behind. My husband likes pristine. Fresh paint,...
