  • Student athlete profile - Sofia Arain

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 31, 2024

Sofia Arain Oak Brook How did you get interested in wrestling? I've always liked fast-acting and kind of combative sports. I've done soccer for years. When I heard the girls were going out for wrestling last year, I thought, "Why not me?" and I ended up falling in love with it. What is it like being in a new sport? It's hard and sometimes you don't have a lot to go on. Last year there were no regionals, there were only sectionals. This year regionals was wonderful. There were...

  • Now that's a tasty meatball!

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 31, 2024

Meatballs come in about as many varieties as you can imagine, with different kinds of meats and fillers. I once judged a meatball contest and ate one that contained raisins. But at Altamura in Hinsdale, the meatball is kept simple. One single ingredient is key to making the meatballs tender and delicious. "This is our imported bread. This is what I use for bread crumbs," said Carmela St. John, who owns the Italian take-and-bake pizza and specialty shop with her husband,...

  • Crime on senator's radar for early '24

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 26, 2024

Suzy Glowiak Hilton, elected to represent the 23rd District in the Illinois Senate in 2018, said she prioritizes constituents, whether they be individuals, businesses or municipalities. She points to the most significant accomplishment of the last legislative session — working with the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulation to modernize the licensing system — with that in mind. “That was one of the things that I was the most excited about in the recent session that we just ended, because it really is go...

  • Vacation rentals might be regulated

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 25, 2024

The Hinsdale Village Board Tuesday agreed to ask the plan commission to look at new regulations for short-term rentals in the village. The proposed ordinance change would set a six-month minimum for rental homes, including those booked through services such as Airbnb or VRBO. As part of its process, the plan commission will hold a public hearing, but a handful of residents spoke out Tuesday night. Michelle Crowe, who lives at 200 S. Bodin St., said some 20 groups rented the house next door through Airbnb between Thanksgiving...

  • Sixth Street work postponed until 2025

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 25, 2024

Work on Sixth Street planned for this summer will be postponed until 2025 so residents have more time to determine their options to save their brick street. "We budgeted $4.5 million for the work on Sixth Street," Village President Tom Cauley said at Tuesday night's Hinsdale Village Board meeting. "If we do an all-brick Sixth Street, that would be a $6.5-million project for four blocks. That is a lot of money for the village." Cauley spoke in response to a plea from Sixth...

  • Parpet added fourth sport to his resume

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 24, 2024

Paul Parpet had been a high school coach for four decades before signing on as the varsity girls bowling head coach at Hinsdale Central almost nine years ago. "This fall I just completed my 50th consecutive year of coaching high school football," Parpet said. "I'm proud of that. That's why I brag about it." Parpet has logged 30 years as head football coach, 21 as head baseball coach and 30 as a freshman basketball coach. After he retired from teaching at Addison Trail High...

  • Putting celebration over competition is way to win

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 24, 2024

I'll admit it. I joined a Ted Lasso Fans Community page on Facebook a while back. I was hoping the posts would share lots of great inspirational quotes from Ted. And there are some. But many of the posts are from fans - fanatics, in the truest sense - asking what book Trent Crimm carried through the office in Episode X Season Y or explaining the double in/double out rule during Ted's dart game against Rupert or wondering if anyone else caught the nod to "Hamilton." Oh, and way...

  • Student athlete profile - Nate Anderson

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 17, 2024

Nate Anderson Clarendon Hills When did you first start playing hockey? When I was about 4 years old, my neighbor dropped off a pair of skates. It was in the wintertime. I went to a frozen rink near me. I skated for the first time. I started playing hockey about a week later. My dad got me lessons, and I just stuck with it. What do you enjoy most about the sport? The team effort and the overall competitiveness that comes with the sport. Your team is like a bunch of brothers....

  • 'The SpongeBob Musical' opening soon

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 17, 2024

Hinsdale Central senior Caroline Walsh didn't watch "SpongeBob Square Pants" as a kid. But the Hinsdale resident is having a great time playing one of its main characters, Patrick Star, in the Stage Door Fine Arts production set to open Jan. 26 (see Page 24 for details). "It's such a fun role," said Walsh, who has been doing Stage Door shows since second grade. "He's so goofy and I feel like it's not what I usually do, so I was really excited to be able to do it." The group...

  • Hinsdale home to youngest TEDx speaker

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 17, 2024

I haven't watched all that many TED talks, but my favorite is one by a Hinsdale resident. Oh, did I mention that he's in preschool? At 4 years, 9 months and 22 days old, Bennet Haried became the youngest TEDx speaker Oct. 23 at an event organized by his preschool, Avery Coonley in Downers Grove. Bennet spoke on "Building Big Dreams: You Have to Make it Stable." It all came about when Kenny Bae, director of STEAM innovation at Avery Coonley, decided to organize a TEDx event at...

  • Legislator looks toward spring session

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 17, 2024

Just before the spring session of the 103rd General Assembly began Tuesday in Springfield, The Hinsdalean spoke with the village' state representative and state senator about their recent accomplishments and priorities for this session. This is the first of a two-part series, with an article on state Sen. Suzy Glowiak Hilton set to run next week. State Rep. Jenn Ladisch Douglass (D-45, Elmhurst) celebrated her first year in office Jan. 11, just days before the spring session...

  • New superintendent, third interim hired

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 17, 2024

As expected, the Hinsdale High School District 86 Board last week hired Michael Lach as its new superintendent. "He's a listener," board President Cat Greenspon said prior to casting her vote at the Jan. 10 special meeting. "Those that come to the board meetings very regularly might actually recognize him, because he took the time to come to our board meetings and get to know our community prior to interviewing. And that, to me, speaks volumes of his intention to understand...

  • 'Hamilton' saves the birthday, doesn't disappoint

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 10, 2024

"Why would I want to go see 'Hamilton' in Chicago?" I asked a couple of months ago as we were talking about the show in the office. I've seen the original New York cast perform more times than I can count - even if it has been on my TV screen. How could anyone top Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs and Renée Elise Goldsberry, I asked my co-workers. Lisa, who has been to see the show two times - once for $10 when she won the ticket lottery - assured me I should...

  • Marching band takes London by storm

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 10, 2024

More than a year ago, Hinsdale Central drum major Deona Julary was given an umbrella along with an invitation for the Hinsdale Central Marching Band to participate in London's New Year's Day Parade. Her instructions? Keep the umbrella on her person to ensure good weather for the parade. She did as she was told. "The umbrella did work," Julary said Monday after returning home from a six-day trip to London. "It was raining every single day in London except parade day, and we are...

  • Best books, performances, shows of '23

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 3, 2024

This is the time of year when every outlet publishes its “best of” lists. The Hinsdalean wanted to get in on the action, with a local twist. So here are the favorite books, performances and TV shows as recommended by folks who live and work in our favorite town. “The best book I read in 2023 is one that actually came out in 2022 — ‘An Immense World’ by Ed Yong. I’m always looking for books — whether fiction or nonfiction — that will transform how I think about the world a...

  • Slow down, shut up are resolutions for 2024

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 3, 2024

Ahh, the early days of January, when we have yet to disappoint ourselves by failing to live up to our New Year’s resolutions. Since it’s already Jan. 4, I guess that might not be true. A cookie might have been consumed, a morning workout skipped. Yes, resolutions are tough to keep. I wrote last year that part of the problem, at least for me, is the specificity of the resolutions I tend to set. I will walk X number of days each month. I will spend X minutes a day cleaning out...

  • Nonprofit leaders reflect back on 2023

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Jan 3, 2024

Each January, we talk to the leaders of seven major nonprofit agencies in Hinsdale about their experiences over the previous year and ask them to share one wish for the current year. The second article in this two-part series — focusing on Candor Health Education, Community Memorial Foundation, HCS Family Services and The Community House — will run Jan. 11. Hinsdale Historical Society With the village celebrating its sesquicentennial in 2023, it’s no surprise the past year was...

  • Winter moves fitness options indoors

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 27, 2023

January is the perfect time to start a new fitness routine - or resuscitate and old one that was abandoned over the holidays. Winter weather makes outdoor exercise a challenge, but The Community House in Hinsdale offers a host of indoor classes to meet a variety of fitness needs. Many of these offerings have sessions that continue into the spring. All are offered at The Community House, 415 W. Eighth St. Some require in-person registration. Discounts are available for The...

  • To Ainsley on her 15th birthday

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 27, 2023

For a dozen years, I've dedicated my final column of the year as a birthday message to my daughter. I hope Ainsley does not one day resent that her birthday letters were first conceived to fulfill a work assignment and instead chooses to appreciate her mother's functional approach to life. (And her mother's inability, after more than 30 years in the newspaper business, to write anything if she's not on deadline.) I once again will offer my apologies to those who are tired of...

  • Vault home to village's earliest records

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 27, 2023

Imagine a cross between a room-sized safe deposit box and the corner of a basement. That's "the vault" at Hinsdale Village Hall. Part storage area for village documents and part holding area for items that need to be thrown away (think village vehicle stickers from 2017), the vault is located inside the administrative wing of the Memorial Building. Village offices originally were in the center part of the building, where there were three vaults, said Jim Piontkowski, building...

  • Holiday Classic is comin' to town

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 20, 2023

The Hinsdale Central boys varsity basketball team will return to the eighth annual Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic Dec. 27 as defending champions. The Red Devils beat Oswego East 54-41 last year to capture the program's first title in the tourney. The team went on to set school records for wins in a season (31) and consecutive victories (23). Then 94 percent of that's team offense graduated in May. But varsity boys basketball coach Nick Latorre is approaching this tournament...

  • Student athlete profile

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 20, 2023

Hazel Hamelka Clarendon Hills When did you first start competing in gymnastics? I started doing gymnastics at the age of 2, but I didn't start competing until I was 10. What is your favorite event? That's a tough question. I'd probably say vault because I'm the best at it. What is your least favorite event? Probably beam, only because I'm a big worrier and I think sometimes it's kind of hard to be positive, especially if you fall, because it's pretty easy to fall off a beam. H...

  • Children focus of Hinsdale mom's volunteer work

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 20, 2023

Volunteering has been a hallmark of Julie Smith's life since her kids were little. She and husband Chadd moved to Hinsdale when their oldest two were just 3 and 1. By the time they were in elementary school, she was ready to lend a hand where needed. "My favorite was helping Patty Mardula in the Madison library," she said. Meaningful opportunities to help others also have arisen through her church, Avenue Christian Church in Clarendon Hills. There she has been on the steering...

  • Full-day kindergarten plans move ahead

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Dec 20, 2023

Community Consolidated Elementary District 181 expects to award construction contracts in February and borrow $24.6 million in June so the district can offer full-day kindergarten for the 2025-26 school year. The board passed a resolution at its meeting Monday indicating it plans to reimburse “certain capital expenditures” from the bond issue. Any hard costs for labor and materials can be reimbursed out of the bond proceeds only if such a resolution is passed, said Mindy Bradford, assistant superintendent for business and...
