Hinsdale Central recently recognized 12 individuals who were named Student of the Quarter by the school’s various departments based on their leadership, kindness and skills as role models.

CENTRAL SENIOR GETS FULL RIDE

Mai-Jeanna Sakho from Hinsdale Central is among the 1,755 high school seniors from across the country who have been awarded a full scholarship for college through the QuestBridge National College Match program.

This program “connects high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds with full four-year scholarships to 48 of the nation’s best colleges.”

Sakho plans to attend the University of Notre Dame.

Science TEACHER NOMINATED

Julie May, chair of the science department at Hinsdale Central, has been nominated for the Northwestern University Morton Schapiro Distinguished Secondary School Teacher Award. Her nomination was submitted by Eleanor Pope, a Central alum and senior at Northwestern who identified May as someone who has had “a transforming impact on the lives of students.”

A committee made up of Northwestern faculty, staff and students will review all of the nominations and select the five individuals who will be presented to the university president for recognition. Those five will be honored during the commencement festivities in June. In addition, they and their schools each will receive a $5,000 award.

Grad STUDENT EARNs master’s

Mira Shekaran of Hinsdale received a master’s degree in clinical exercise physiology in a December 2022 commencement ceremony at University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

STUDENT INDUCTED INTO PHI KAPPA PHI

Kathleen Ryndak of Hinsdale, a student at Elmhurst University, recently was initiated into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society.

Ryndak is among some 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
