GOLFERS HELP TEAM WIN TITLE

Sophomores Jacob Gupta and Charlie Krasnewich of Hinsdale helped the St. Ignatius boys golf team win the IHSA Class 2A state championship Oct. 11 at Weibring Golf Club in Normal with a score of 585.

Benton High School came in second with 594 strokes.

Gupta scored 147 and Krasnewich scored 160 to contribute to the title.

This is the second team IHSA state championship in the school’s history and the first overall boys state team championship.

En route to state, the team won its second straight IHSA sectional, with Krasnewich among the top scorers with a 72; and the regional championship, with Gupta as medalist with a 73 and Krasnewich shooting a 77.

The team will now compete in a national high school tournament at Pinehurst, N.C. in July.

MADONIA NAMED TOP COACH

Tony Madonia, Hinsdale Central soccer coach and a special education teacher in the District 86 HAVEN program, has been accepted into the U.S. Coaches’ 30 Under 30 Program.

Each year, 15 male and 15 female coaches who are “leading the way in developing soccer players and enhancing the game” are invited to participate in this program, which offers them access to a variety of educational and mentorship opportunities.

The 30 coaches were selected from a pool of almost 300 applicants.

BASEBALL CAMP DONATES FUNDS

Devils Youth Baseball Camp Griffin Hawthorne of Hinsdale and his team of instructors donated $2,000 from a summer camp to the Brooks Strong Foundation in honor of Hinsdale’s Brooks Tonn, a baseball-loving boy who lost a battle with cancer in 2017 at age 10.

Current and former Hinsdale Central varsity baseball players taught baseball fundamentals to nearly 100 local youth ages 5-8 at the Devils Youth Baseball Camp this summer.
