Allen H Schiefelbein Jr., 79, of Hinsdale, died June 18, 2024.
He was born in 1945, the only child of Rose and Allen Sr., and was raised in Lyons. His paternal grandparents emigrated from Germany and Italy, and his maternal grandparents emigrated from Czechoslovakia.
Allen married Joan on July 20, 1969, the same day Apollo 11 landed on the moon for the first time in history. He lived in Lyons, Riverside, Hinsdale and at his summer home on Klinger Lake in White Pigeon, Mich. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1968 from Valparaiso University School of Business, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He attended one year of law school at Chicago-Kent Law School. After working jobs as a truck driver for his uncle and father, he went to Worsham Mortuary School and became a licensed embalmer and funeral home director. A short time later, he went into the financial services and life insurance business and as an agent for Mutual Benefit Life Insurance. He obtained his CLU, ChFC and other securities licenses. He was a member and manager of several financial associations, including Million Dollar Round Table for highly successful people in the insurance business. He became a general agent of Mutual Benefit, which became Mass Mutual, until he "retired" in 2000. He continued to service select clients until his passing.
He served on Loyola University's Family Business Council.
He also was a successful entrepreneur, owning a Häagen-Dazs franchise with his fraternity brother, Mac, and two electrical contracting companies, Lyons and Pinner Electric, with his cousin, Bill.
He is survived by his wife, Joan, nee Bortman; his sons, Chad (Kim) and Adam (Lisa Tang); and his grandchildren, Laken, Cole, Charlotte and Carissa.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brett.
A funeral Mass was held June 27 at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Hinsdale.
Interment was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
