Robert A. O'Connell

Robert A. O'Connell, 83, formerly of Oak Brook, passed away Feb. 13, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Bob, born in 1939 on one of the hottest September days in recorded history, spent his early years on the south side of Chicago in a two-flat with his Renehan cousins. He was a proud graduate of Fenwick High School and Saint Norbert College and spent nearly 40 years trading on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade.

Bob will be remembered fondly for his pride in his Irish heritage, unmatched storytelling, colorful nicknames, his giant laugh and his love of God, family, friends, Notre Dame and a good watering hole. He loved his children and grandchildren with all his heart and despite his Irish stubbornness, or maybe because of it, he made sure they knew it.

Bob never met a stranger that didn't become his friend.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Judi, nee Olesen; his grandson, Ethan Stein; and his siblings, Janet McCue and James A. O'Connell.

He is survived by his children, Gary Hypes of Hinsdale, Kendall Hypes, Heather (David) O'Bryan of Hinsdale, Bethany Priester (Steve Byers), Cory (Loren) Hypes, Elizabeth (Damon) Wos, Katie O'Connell and Andrew O'Connell; his grandchildren, Taylor and Dillon Hypes, Charlie, Daisy, Ethan and Hayden Stein, Delaney, Mackenzie and Emma O'Bryan, Charlotte, Harry and Hannah Priester, Alexandra, Claudia and Nolan Hypes, Liam, Ewan, Miles and Graeme Wos and Cormac Robert O'Connell.

Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Sullivan Funeral Home, 60 S. Grant St., Hinsdale.

Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at Saint Isaac Jogues, 306 W. Fourth St., Hinsdale.

Interment is at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook, followed by a celebration of life to share stories of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made online to NAMI Metro Suburban at http://www.namimetsub.org.
