Library makes summer reading even more fun

Ninety-six percent of educators agree providing year-round access to books is important to student learning. Ninety-four percent of parents agree reading books over the summer will help their child during the school year. Seventy-four percent of kids say reading fiction and nonfiction helps them understand the world, according to Scholastic.

And 100 percent of librarians at the Hinsdale Public Library hope kids, teens and adults will sign up for their summer reading club, which runs through July 31.

A summer reading kick-off party was scheduled for last night, but its not too late to join.

Adults are invited to read, watch or attend something new and can pick up a challenge card at the adult services desk. Completed cards will be entered into a drawing to receive a $100 gift card from Fuller House.

For those who would like to enjoy a little entertainment when they stop by to check out a book, there are plenty of options.

Family Fun Mondays will feature Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles (June 20), The Flying Fox Conservation Fund (June 27), Frankie Ace Magic (July 11) and the Frog Lady (July 25). Programs start at 6:30 p.m.

Other options include singing along with Disney’s “Encanto” (noon to 2 p.m. July 20), playing Family Bingo Boogie (4 to 5 p.m. July 27) and learning how to crochet (drop in between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. July 22).

Teens can attend a monthly book club just for them (4 to 5 p.m. June 19, July 14 and Aug. 11) to discuss YA titles. They might want to try making homemade sugar body scrub and soap (2 to 3 p.m. June 22), painting a tropical tote bag (3 to 4 p.m. June 28) or journaling (3 to 4 p.m. July 7).

Adults can learn about the life of Loie Fuller, a Hinsdalean who became a famous dancer in the late 19th century, when author Liz Heinecke visits the library (7 to 8:30 p.m. June 28). Adults also can enjoy a presentation on the history of the Beatles (7 to 8 p.m. June 22), paint watercolor macarons (7 to 8:15 p.m. July 12) and hear about new books at Novel Tea (3 to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 29).

Registration is required for most programs. Do so online at https://www.hinsdalelibary.info.
