9U Falcons shut out Bloomingdale

It might have been Labor Day weekend, but the Falcon 9U defense showed up to work. A strong team effort — as every Falcon played defense on Saturday — paved the way for a 13-0 victory over Bloomingdale.

The Falcons got the ball first and proceeded to go on a long opening drive, capped off by a 14-yard touchdown run by quarterback Spencer Marnell for a 6-0 lead.

The defense then stopped the Bears on the ensuing drive. With Marnell banged up, Nick Carbonara stepped into the quarterback role and lead the Falcons on a 6-minute drive that ate up all of the clock, allowing the Falcons to take the lead into halftime.

The offensive line — led by Josh Castro, Ryan Pieczkowski, Massimo Burdi, Salvatore Calandriello and Bennett Zeikus — was very effective.

The Falcons stopped the Bears again to start the second half. To change things up the Falcons struck quickly, as Michael Kipnis busted through and broke several tackles on the way to a 58-yard touchdown run. Grady Wood supplied the last block downfield that sprung Kipnis. Gavin Schuler scampered around the end for the extra point and a 13-0 lead.

The Falcon defense was relentless, stopping the Bears again. Sullivan Camp, Gavin Schuyler, Ben Murphy, Carbonaro and Nate Thangamani turned away the Bears when they tried to get outside.

Kipnis, George Beatty, Kellen Brown, Keegan McCoskey, Jack Cory took care of everything else up the middle, creating a vise-like grip from which the Bears could not escape.

JV Silver TAKES OVER in Palatine

The Falcons JV Silver team dominated both sides of the ball this past Saturday in Palatine, winning 41-7.

Owen Sunderson punched in a short run off the left side for the first score of the day. After the Falcon defense stuffed Palatine for the second time in two possessions, the Hinsdale offense was back in charge.

On the first play of the following drive Alex Przyzycki took a handoff off the left side and went 45 yards for a touchdown, breaking tackles the whole way. The Falcons would score on every possession of the first half. The offense was hitting on all cylinders, consistently churning out positive yardage. The boys in the trenches were a force.

Offensive line play was led by guard Luke Zajicek and center Michael Sharples. On the day Sunderson ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more. Luke McLaughlin caught both of Sunderson’s touchdown passes. Przyzycki added a touchdown and Jack Enright capped off Hinsdale scoring with a fourth quarter 85-yard scamper for a touchdown off the right side. Graham Marnell and Tom Golon also contributed to the action with some nice runs and a few 1 point conversions.

It was an impressive effort all around from the Falcons’ defense. Nose guard Matthew Tomfohrde spent as much time in the Palatine backfield as the opposing quarterback. Henry Kohn, John Breton, Jack Wyent and Jimmy Satchwell also chipped in strong performances on the day. Andrew Nield played great at safety, grabbing the Falcons’ first interception of the season.

They play again next Saturday at Oswego at 11:30 a.m.

JV GOLD BATTLES TO WIN OVER BEARS

It was a back-and-forth defensive battle Sunday for the JV Gold Falcons, playing a hard-nosed Bloomingdale Bears squad.

Both teams were only able to grind out eight first downs a piece throughout the entire game. As the game was grinding toward overtime with under a minute left, the Falcon defense held firm.

Marko Wallace stripped the football from a Bloomingdale running back, and the ball popped directly into linebacker Colin Palms’ hands. Palm sprinted towards the end zone as he was ushered by a list of Falcons, especially Charles Calhoun, en route to the 80-yard touchdown that led to a 6-0 victory.

Senior Gold Beats the Bears

The eighth-grade grade Falcons knew the history of this rivalry with Bloomingdale hadn’t been positive. However, this time, Bloomingdale met the new-look Falcons Senior Gold at Dickinson Field, and this time, it was positive.

The Falcons ended a four-game drought against the Bears to improve to 2-0. Final score: Falcons 24, Bears 8.

An early score did not help the Bears as the Falcons were led by a relentless front line headed by Grant Cook, Gene Riordan, Logan Schultz, Jeff Collier, Charlie Hoyt, Owen Joyce and Finn Hamman. Hamman also had three tackles for losses. Hinsdale’s Riley C and Patrick C rushed for 300 yards on the day. Tors “City Pop” Luthrinshausens scored for the Bears. Coach Joe Corcoran, also manning the BBQ at Dickinson, was in tears, and not from the smoked brisket.

“This game reminds me of the time we let a few slip away, and the heartbreak we felt, like me finding out that ‘Friends’ was canceled. Go Falcons!”

The Falcons face a big foe in Palatine this weekend at Dickinson Field. Game time 2:30.
