Dr. James Norman Young

Dr. James Norman Young, 94, a former longtime Hinsdale resident, passed away Oct. 13, 2020 at the home of his son, Dr. Scott Young, in Little Rock, Ark.

He was born in 1926 to Regina and Dr. Alexander James Young in Omaha, Neb. At 6 months, he accompanied his parents back to Scotland for his father's HEENT Fellowship in Glasgow, then returned to Nebraska and was raised there as the youngest of three sons. At the age of 9, Norman Young had a newspaper route, and when his family moved two miles away, he continued to walk this paper route. He worked in a grocery store and was active in ROTC. After graduating from high school, Norman enlisted in the Navy and was soon assigned to the St. Ambrose officer training school in Davenport, Iowa.

After his military service he returned to the campus of Northwestern University, where he met Nadyne Mae Hecker and married her Dec. 16, 1950. Norman went to medical school at Northwestern and became a general surgeon in La Grange and Hinsdale Hospitals. His practice spanned 45 years.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Malcolm and Gavin; his wife of 59 years, Nadyne Young; and his in-laws, Carl and Zora Hecker.

He is survived by his children, Dr. Norman Bruce Young, Cynthia Ann Young and Dr. Scott MacGregor (Karen) Young; his grandchildren, Zachary Norman (Cortney) Young JD, Bonnie Nadyne Young; Heather Renee (Dr. Chad) Capps, Elizabeth Carol Young, Alexander Carl (Catarina) Young and Julie Camille Young; his great-grandchildren, Benjamin Zachary Young, Ella Nadyne Young, Samuel Robert Young, Colton James Capps and Charli Renee Capps; his companion, Eva Hoard; and his daughter-in-law, Shelly Renee Young.

The family offers a special thanks to caregivers at SeniorKare, including Cleo and Mark in Hinsdale. Due to current health restrictions, a private family graveside service will be held at Bronswood Cemetery in Oak Brook.

A memorial Zoom service from the chapel at Christ Church of Oak Brook will follow interment.
