LOMBARD SHUTS OUT 11U GOLD

The Hinsdale Falcons 11U Gold lost a tough game against the Lombard Falcons Sunday by a final score of 12-0.

After kicking off to Lombard, Hinsdale started out strong with defensive end Tommy Riordan forcing a fumble, which was recovered by safety Charlie Fox on the game’s opening play from scrimmage. However, in a pattern that would repeat itself, the Hinsdale offense had a hard time moving the ball against a stout Lombard defense.

Special teams also proved challenging for Hinsdale, as Lombard was able to block two first-half punts, the second of which set Lombard up with a short field. Lombard was able to capitalize with a 14-yard touchdown run on the next play to take a 6‑0 lead. A Hinsdale fumble on the ensuing drive, recovered by the defense, again gave Lombard outstanding field position deep in Hinsdale territory. Facing a fourth and long, a Lombard running back found a seam and scampered into the end zone to give Lombard a 12-0 halftime cushion. Hinsdale’s offense had opportunities to cut into the lead in the second half but couldn’t break a big play and failed on three fourth down conversion attempts. Defensively, despite giving up two short-field touchdowns, Hinsdale was solid, with big tackles by defensive end Jameson Hellenga, linebacker Nick Newmann and interior linemen Gene Riordan, Logan Schultz and Sam Newmann.

The team looks to even its record and put together a complete game on both sides of the ball against league newcomer Oswego at home Sunday.

11U SILVER SHOWING PROMISE

The Hinsdale Falcons 11U Silver dropped another tough one to a very physical Elk Grove football team 24-6.

The Falcons played hard and were in the game for three quarters before the Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter.

The Falcon defense was steady and disciplined throughout the first half, led by stout defense and steady tackling led by the linebacking corps of Michael McGowan, Owen Joyce and Luke Mellilo. They really set the tone of the defense. Ben Tiritilli, Alec Allegra and Timas Marchertas did a fine job protecting the outside and forcing the Eagles to work for every yard they got.

On offense the Falcons had strong contributions from the offensive line — which is starting to really gel as a unit — led by Corbin Camp, Tommy Willet, Luke Melillo, Logan Barrios, Charlie Hoyt and Liam Joyce.

In the second quarter, Owen Joyce took the ball off left tackle and followed the powerful block of brother Joyce while breaking away from the defense for a 40-yard touchdown. Allegra was a standout passing the ball as well hitting passes to multiple receivers including Tiritilli, Owen Joyce and Connor McLaurin. It’s going to be exciting seeing this passing game evolve over the season.

The Falcons were beaten but not defeated. The team has a bye this weekend and plays next Sept. 21 against the Bartlett Raiders.

COWBOYS EDGE OUT VARSITY BLACK

Three sweep plays by Arlington Heights Varsity Gold that turned into touchdowns proved to be too much Saturday for the Falcons Varsity Black Team, which lost 24-16.

Coaches gave the Hammer Award very deservedly to Luke Jurack. The Pancake Award was given to the entire offensive line (Max Deering, Brady Koschik, Marko Ivanisevic, Mark Ortiz, Alex Rivera and Ryan Schulz).

Jurack was on fire with an interception catch, a 60-yard touchdown catch and run, a 2-point conversion and with two kick returns. Mark Ortiz was effective on the line creating holes to give the offense running room. Jett Hilding connected to Carter Contreras for some long gains but holding calls and a controversial offensive pass interference call prevented the Falcons from adding to the scoreboard.

Kellen Tran made some nice tackles to keep the score low early in the game and Koschik prevented an interception from becoming a touchdown with a huge tackle. Talha Khan was recognized by the coaches for playing hard all day and making some key tackles. Deering was instrumental on the line with reading the offense and calling plays.

The team is preparing to take on a strong Oswego Varsity Gold at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, on home turf at Hinsdale Central’s Dickinson Field.

Varsity Red Just Misses the W

The Varsity Red Team faced a sizable Oswego Varsity Silver team Saturday, ending regulation with a score of 12-12.

Extra time was added to the clock. Hinsdale scored first with a touchdown and decided to run the ball in for one extra point.

But Oswego also scored and chose wisely to kick through the uprights for the extra two points to win the game 20-19.

Coaches awarded the Pancake Award to Zach Kruse and the Hammer Award to Sammy Davino. Both executed great plays all game long to keep their team alive until the very end.

On defense, Davino, Dylan Elder, Noah McCurry and Anthony Tiritilli made several great tackles to keep Oswego from scoring on several occasions. Both the offense and defense as a whole did a tremendous job, considering they were a bit outsized.

Kruse also tore up the field with an interception and some great catches from quarterback Kevin Coan, one for a touchdown and two just shy of the endzone. Coan also ran for several yards throughout the day, including the extra time touchdown and extra point. Dylan Elder came up big with a key fumble recovery early in the game but the team’s valiant efforts were just short of bringing home the win.

The team takes on Wheaton Varsity Silver at 10 a.m. Sept. 15 at Hinsdale Central’s Dickinson Field.

10U GOLD DOMINATES

The 10U gold Hinsdale Falcons started the scoring quickly Saturday against the Arlington Heights Cowboys, going up 6-0 on the first series of the game thanks to some great blocking by Frankie Chemmachel and a beautiful 50-yard run by Charles Calhoun. The defense played well as unit the entire game, only giving up six total points. Fantastic tackling by Orestas Bouckus, Miko Zecevic, Jupiter Pohlenz, Charles Calhoun, Charlie Heck and Owen Sunderson shut the Cowboys down all game long. Bockus had a 50-yard touchdown in the second half and Charles Calhoun took another hand off and ran a reverse into the end zone to punch in the third touchdown for the day! Quarterback Brian O’Malley threw a beautiful pass to Connor Cousineau for the two point conversion, making it 20-6 and putting the game away for good! The Falcons played together as a unit and are 3-0 on the season.
