  • Boy's composure in crisis provides lifeline for dad

    Updated Mar 6, 2024

Nov. 12, 2023, is a day the Meltzer family of Hinsdale will long remember. The late autumn Sunday began with a drive to the bike shop for 10-year-old Jacob Meltzer and his dad, Bob, to get Jacob's wheel fixed. Returning home, Jacob hopped out in the driveway and Bob proceeded into the garage. But something was off. "When my dad pulled in, he started hitting the garbage can," recounted Jacob, who jokingly admonished his dad to watch where he was going. It quickly became...

A host of actors, filmmakers, composers, costume designers and other talented individuals will take home an Academy Award Sunday night. With Hinsdale being such a high-achieving community, we thought it only right that some local people, places and things receive an award as well. So, without further ado — or a big opening number or jokes from Jimmy Kimmel — we recognize the following: • Best performance during an election — Cat Greenspon presented herself as a reasonable individual whose priority was district student...

  • Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Feb 28, 2024

Signs provide us with all kinds of information. "Slow, children playing" lets us know kids reside on a particular block. (Since kids live on many blocks that don't have such signs, these warnings also might indicate worried parents live on the block as well.) Signs indicating downtown Hinsdale and the Robbins Park subdivision are on the National Register of Historic Places demonstrate the importance of the village's past to Hinsdaleans - or at least to those who are...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Feb 21, 2024

  • Trustees look to support preservation

Hinsdale trustees want to support the Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission in its work. So next month they will discuss adding steps to the process for homeowners who want to tear down a historic district or landmarked home and build something new in its place. “I think there’s competing interests here for historic preservation on one hand and the right of the homeowner,” Village President Tom Cauley said at Tuesday’s village board meeting. “I do think we have to strike a balance between these two concerns. That said...

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Feb 14, 2024

By Pamela Lannom [email protected] Union Church of Hinsdale had plenty of reasons to celebrate Irv Clarke Sunday. First, it was the day before Clarke, who has lived most of his life in Hinsdale, turned 100. Instead, as explained by a Tollway representative at the Feb. 1 village board meeting, a temporary 8-foot wooden fence will be erected along the western side of the highway after the existing noise wall is torn down. “Once the temporary fencing is installed, we ant...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Jan 31, 2024

The proposal to demolish the 90-year-old home at 425 E. Eighth St., the latest flashpoint in the ongoing tussle between preservationists and those seeking room for redevelopment, will again be the subject of public hearing before the village’s historic preservation commission next week. During a Dec. 6 public hearing before commission on a request to build new on the site located in the Robbins Historic District, several residents spo...
