    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 14, 2020

Many Facebook pages are filled with inspirational messages or coronavirus jokes. Sean Chaudhry's reads like a promotional piece for Hinsdale businesses. Last week, he enjoyed burgers, nachos and banana bourbon pudding from Fuller House for dinner. The week before he encouraged friends to support Page's Restaurant when it opened for takeout the last weekend of March. He's thrown shout-outs to King Keyser's bike repair service, Cafe la Fortuna's coffee and The Salon by David &...

  • This week's cover

    Updated Apr 9, 2020

What else are little brothers for? - The Carter brothers - Henry, Jake and Luke - spent some time last week creating sidewalk art. Even though at some point Jake decided to turn their creation into an obstacle course, his older brothers didn't flinch and continued drawing. With Tuesday night's rain, the slate has been wiped clean and they can begin again. Sidewalks across the village have seen a lot of chalk drawings created either during break time or art class time. For...

  • Wellness House walk goes virtual to raise funds

    Alexis Braden|Updated Apr 8, 2020

In the midst of social distancing, one quarantine-approved activity has brought so many of us out of our homes — walking. For Wellness House, the influx of pedestrians taking to the streets signified an opportunity. Rather than cancel its annual fundraising walk, which traditionally draws more than 3,000 and raises vital funds for the organization’s free-of-charge cancer programming, this year’s walk will be virtual. The Virtual Walk for Wellness House will take place Sunda...

For believers this is an occasion to exult in victory over death, in the hope of a greater existence beyond the suffering of this world. The Hinsdalean reached out to leaders of the village's faith communities to learn what celebrating this season against a backdrop of deep anxiety - and separation from one another - has stirred in them. Here's what they had to say (some have been ex...

  • Focusing on prayer and hope during Holy Week

    Mary Rayis|Updated Apr 8, 2020

Watching a livestream of Palm Sunday Mass was a strange experience. Ordinarily, Palm Sunday is a day that begins with a jubilant procession into the church, the congregation waving palm branches in imitation of the crowds that welcomed Jesus to Jerusalem. The rite goes from celebratory to solemn as we recall Christ’s passion and death. Yesterday, though, I watched a priest in an all but empty church preside over the “source and summit of the Catholic faith” — the Mass. A...

  • Quarantine a chance for introspection

    Susan OByrne|Updated Apr 8, 2020

There's a funny meme making its way through social media these days, which reads: "Just a reminder that when Shakespeare was quarantined with the plague, he wrote King Lear." This is actually true of several Shakespearean works that were composed while the London theaters were closed. As if I weren't feeling unproductive enough that I'm not teaching myself to knit, brushing up on oil painting or abiding by a strict workout regime during these parlous times. There will come a...

  • Father-daughter time at unprecedented levels

    Pamela Lannom|Updated Apr 8, 2020

The role reversal that's taken place at my house over the last few weeks has left me a little unsettled. It's also brought me great joy. As I head out for work each morning, I leave Dan and Ainsley at home. He has been grounded from traveling - something that typically occupies about 50 percent of his time - and she and students across the state have been banned from school. They've set up their work stations at the dining room table, side by side so he can make sure she does...

    Ken Knutson|Updated Apr 8, 2020

This week the Rombergers were expecting to be sharing stories about their spring trip to Rome with friends, coworkers and Hinsdale neighbors. The trip, of course, didn't happen, thanks to COVID-19. And there hasn't been much sharing of anything with anyone due to shelter in place restrictions. But Lisa Romberger said her passion for promoting community mindedness has not been confined. Last week, she and her family created and displayed more than 100 luminaria on their block a...
