Peter St.
Clair Early
Peter St.
Clair Early of Hinsdale died June 15, 2010, at home
surrounded by his family following a brief illness.
Mr. Early, 54, was born Oct. 4, 1955, in Huntington, W.V., the
youngest of five brothers. He moved with his family to
Hinsdale in 1962 when his father became the executive
director of the American Bar Association. He attended the
public schools of Hinsdale and was a 1974 graduate of
Hinsdale Central High School. He
attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, the
University of South Carolina in Columbia and the University
of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in philosophy. He was an
Eagle Scout.
He had broad experience in the furniture and furnishings industry.
He was a partner and the manager of Salvage One
Architectural Artifacts of Chicago from 1986-91, when it was
the largest dealer in the United States in antique
architectural building materials and furnishings. Prior to
joining Salvage One, he served as office service manager of
the Chicago law firm of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. Prior
to that he was supervisor of special services for the law
firm of Hopkins & Sutter.
He is survived by his parents, Bert and Elizabeth Early of
Hinsdale; his four brothers, B. Hylton (Deborah) Early Jr.
of Charlotte, N.C., Robert C. (Barbara) Early of Hinsdale,
Mark R. (Tina) Early of Dallas and Philip H. Early of Los
Angeles.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, at
The Union Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield Ave.

Pfc. Gunnar
Randall Hotchkin
Pfc. Gunnar Randall
Hotchkin was killed in action June 16, 2010, in northern
Afghanistan.
Mr. Hotchkin, 31, was born Dec. 23, 1978, in Hinsdale.
He grew up in Hinsdale and was a 1997 graduate of
Hinsdale Central High School. He swam
for the Red Devil swim team and was a member of a state
championship relay and an All-American.
He worked as a superintendent for Pasquinelli Builders. With the
slowdown in the housing industry, he joined the U.S. Army
last year to further his education and to serve his country.
He passed through his military training with high acclaim for his
physical fitness, sharpshooting and professionalism as a
soldier, graduating in the top 10 percent of his class. He
earned his wings and certification from the Airborne Academy
at Fort Benning, Ga. He was a private first class in the 161st Engineer Support Company, 27th
Engineer Battalion, 20th Engineer Brigade. He had found a
true calling with the Army and was strongly considering
extending his enlistment to make a career out of his
service.
A devoted father and husband, his
family was the ultimate priority in everything he did. He
felt a very strong tie to his fellow soldiers and held his
brothers-in-arms in the highest esteem.
He is survived by his wife, Erin; his three children, Taylor, Ethan
and Tristan; his brother, Kurt; his parents, Christine and
Randall; his niece and nephew; and his grandmother, Ly
Hotchkin.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Thursday, June 24, at Gibbons
Elliston Funeral Home, First and Grant streets, Hinsdale.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 25, at Union
Church of Hinsdale, 137 S. Garfield Ave.
Interment will follow at Fairmount Willow Hills Memorial Park in
Willow Springs.
Friends and family are invited to a reception at 2 p.m. Friday at
The Community House, Eighth and Madison streets, Hinsdale.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gunnar Hotchkin
Memorial Fund, Harris Bank of Hinsdale, 50 S. Lincoln St.,
Hinsdale, IL 60521, which will go directly to the support of
his children.
James Robert
Phillip Sr.
James Robert “J.R.”
Phillip Sr., a former Hinsdale resident, died June 22, 2010,
in Westmont.
Mr. Phillip, 84, was born July 8, 1925, in Chicago to James A. and
Helen Phillip. He lived in Westmont.
A navigator in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, Mr. Phillip
graduated from Northwestern University with a commerce
degree and then joined his parents’ flower business,
Phillip’s Flowers & Gifts, in Cicero. He remained actively
involved for 61 years, serving as chairman emeritus up to
his passing.
A floral designer and entrepreneur, he was a co-founder and
director of the Bank of LaGrange Park, a co-founder of the
Metro Chicago Florist Delivery Co-op and a member of the
American Academy of Floriculture. He was also a longtime
member and past elder of Christ Church of Oak Brook.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mary B. Phillip; his
sister, Lee Phillip Bell of Chicago television fame; his
brother and business colleague, Russell Phillip; his
children, Jim (Gwen), Don (Sandy) and Baxter (Martha)
Phillip; eight grandchildren; and one great grandson — many
of whom are leading the family business into its fourth
generation.
A memorial service and celebration will be held at Christ Church of
Oak Brook, 31st Street and York Road, in his honor this
